Organic Crib Mattress For Healthy Baby
Organic mattresses come in various configurations. These have certain advantages over non-organic ones. Organic materials are also used to manufacture pads/toppers. The characteristics of these mattresses and pads have been given.
Organic mattress/beds
The organic mattress case is manufactured from certified organic cotton velour ticking, natural wool batting, organic cotton batting, certified organic muslin and 100% cotton durable canvas bottom cloth. The core component of an organic mattress is an all natural foam manufactured using sap from the rubber tree. This material has inherent dynamic contouring properties and is naturally resistant to bacteria, mildew and mold. The high-density foam of 6 lb can last upto 30 years if correctly encased. If exposed to the elements, it can biodegrade in a couple of weeks to dust. The firmness of organic mattresses may be soft, medium, medium-firm or firm. While buying an organic mattress, the cost and the aesthetics have to be considered. The different configurations of an organic mattress are:
A mattress pad must be used below the sheets to protect it from spills. Any stains on the organic mattress must be cleaned with mild soap and water. The organic casings must not be washed as they may shrink or get damaged. When the organic mattress becomes wet, the inner and outer covers must be removed from the foam. This foam must then be exposed to air and not sunlight. Then, it must be allowed to dry for some days.
Characteristics of organic mattresses
Disadvantages of non-organic mattresses
Plastics, foams and polyesters are used to a large extent in non-organic mattresses. These can emit toxic gases that can be inhaled and absorbed during the night. Commercially processed cotton contains pesticides and this causes inhalation of chemicals. In the moist conditions of these absorbent mattresses, dust mites prosper. Their microscopic feces cause bed-generated allergies. Such unhealthy sleeping conditions may prove risky to the health.
Organic mattress toppers/pads
Organic mattress toppers are used to add comfort and support during sleep. The 2 inch natural rubber mattress topper is made of a 2 inch natural rubber layer surrounded by layers of pure wool. This is quilted in an organic cotton cover. This does not contain any synthetic material. Use of this topper greatly reduces unpleasant pressure points. It is naturally resistant to moisture build-up, bacteria, allergy, mold and dust. The quilted natural latex mattress topper is made of 2 inches of natural latex and not any synthetic materials. This is topped with organic cotton and pure grow wool quilted to organic cotton ticking. The pure wool 2.5 inches mattress topper is made of chemical free pure wool and quilted to the certified organic cotton cover. The pure grow wool 3 inches mattress topper has a natural organic cotton cover and is hand tufted for quality and comfort. A zippered organic cotton washable cover provides additional protection.
